Office space energy efficiency 'more important than cost'

16/10/09
Organisations hoping to make their premises more energy efficient will start to research which buildings have lower carbon emissions, rather than rating rental prices as the top priority, a claim suggests.

Under the Carbon Reduction Commitment, which comes into effect in April, larger private and public sector organisations will need to significantly improve their energy efficiency to meet their green responsibilities the legislation will put in place, David Tonks, head of office agency at DTZ, tells the Birmingham Post.

And builders in Birmingham could soon find they are in demand to make properties greener, after he points to Calthorpe House, which is the first property in central Birmingham to obtain an "excellent" Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method rating.

"Landlords and investors with property holdings which are anything less than efficient need to implement improvements now if they are to be ready for this new world order," Mr. Tonk says.

Owners of residential property may, therefore, want to research builders through Rated People who are skilled in making green improvements to lower carbon emissions, which could also result in lower energy bills for tenants and landlords alike.
