Over 11,000 sites using Feed-in Tariffs, says Ofgem

Some 11,352 residential property and business owners signed up for renewable energy systems in the first six months of the government's Feed-in Tariff (FIT) scheme, according to a new report.

The Sustainable Development Focus from Ofgem shows a total of 44 megawatts of generation capacity has been installed under the incentive programme, enough to power 35,000 homes.

FITs provide guaranteed payments every month to households and companies that adopt green technologies capable of producing up to five megawatts of electricity.

Additional payments are available to those who sell power they do not use back to the grid.

Ofgem said solar photovoltaic panels have accounted for the majority of FIT installations since the scheme was launched in April.

In the comprehensive spending review, the government announced it would retain the incentive programme but that it would be "refocused" on the most cost-effective systems in a bid to save around £40 million by 2014-15.
