A record-breaking 1,200 Green Flags and Green Pennants have been awarded to local authority-run parks and spaces managed by community and volunteer groups.
The awards are run on behalf of the Department for Communities and Local Government by the Green Flag Plus Partnership, an alliance of Keep Britain Tidy, GreenSpace and the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers.
Flags are given to the best council-run parks, while pennants are bestowed on outstanding urban green spaces managed by local people.
Communities minister Andrew Stunell said these areas are the vital "green lungs" of neighbourhoods a high density of commercial, industrial and
residential property, as well as being important places for people to meet, exercise and learn about nature.
"What I have seen shows that sometimes the smallest spaces transformed are of the greatest benefit to their community if the community is involved from the start and drive the changes themselves," he added.
According to the Green Flag Plus Partnership, the 2010-11 award winners attract around 1.8 billion visitors a year.
