The government's trial of pay as you save (PAYS) schemes to support residential property owners in carrying out environmentally-friendly home improvements is an "incredibly positive" step towards improve energy efficiency and cutting carbon emissions, an expert has claimed.
Gordon Miller, founder of sustainable development website whatgreenhome.com, said the PAYS initiative provides a financial incentive to households, which will be crucial in encouraging more people to go green.
In December, the government announced that 500 homes in Birmingham, Sunderland, Stroud and London would take part in a trial of PAYS schemes.
The £4 million initiative provides property owners with a loan to pay for builders to carry out green home improvements such as renewable energy systems.
Households pay off the funding over a long period using the savings made on fuel bills. If they move, the repayments are passed on to the new occupants.
