Queen goes green with home improvements

Environmental concerns and the financial squeeze are making it more important for households to minimise their bills by enhancing the energy efficiency of their property - and it seems the royal family are no different.

The Queen is reportedly planning to have double glazing installed at Buckingham Palace to ensure the monarch's London residence is doing its bit to cut carbon emissions and fuel costs.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, the typical house loses around 18 per cent of its heat through the windows and replacing single glazing with Energy Saving Recommended double glazed windows would save around £135 a year.

Doing the same for Buckingham Palace, with its 775 rooms including 19 state rooms, 78 bathrooms, 92 offices, 52 royal and guest bedrooms and 188 staff quarters, would make a significantly larger dent in its heating bill, it added.

Buckingham Palace has been the official London residence of the monarch since 1837.
