A new system designed to collect rainwater, filter it and store it for use in washing machines, toilets and gardening could cut mains consumption by up to 50 per cent, its maker has claimed.
The Monsoon unit from Stormsaver is specifically designed for the residential property market, the manufacturer said.
It also uses 90 per cent less energy than many traditional pumping systems for harvesting rainwater and comes with connections for solar or wind power systems.
Stormsaver managing director Michael Farnsworth said that increasing demand from a growing population is making mains water "an increasingly precious resource".
"This is why more and more people are capturing their own rainwater - to make sure they have enough for their needs at a price they can afford," he added.
Recent research from Santander showed that in the past 12 months, 21 per cent of UK home owners have switched their water, gas or electricity supplier in order to lower their bills.
