Highlighting the "powerful" environmental, economic and social benefits of eco-homes will drive public demand for
green houses and encourage
builders to improve their standards, according to one expert.
Sustain Worldwide director of sustainability and communications Gordon Miller said government legislation is already pushing for greater
energy efficiency in housing - but increased awareness of the benefits for families will create a "virtuous circle" that will deliver improvements for consumers, the construction industry and the wider environment.
He added that, from an owner's point of view, the main advantages of having a greener
residential property include lower energy bills, improved health and wellbeing and being "future-proof" against changing climate conditions.
Mr. Miller's comments come after Building for Life announced 55 housing developments achieved one of its standards for good design this year.
This is the highest number recorded in the eight-year history of the initiative and represents a 50 per cent increase on the figure for 2009.
