Teachers and
residential property owners should be teaching children that taking the time to recycle household rubbish is "part and parcel of being a good citizen".
Mike Webster of charity Waste Watch, which aims to educate people about the ways they can cut needless consumption, said learning about the benefits of recycling is something that should be happening from a "really young age".
He added that his organisation has delivered its message of conservation to around 1.5 million schoolchildren across the country through assembly presentations and outreach programmes.
Mr. Webster said local authorities also need to help
residential property owners by improving the collection of different types of household refuse, while manufacturers need to look at how they can cut waste associated with their products and make it easier to recycle packaging.
According to the Local Government Association, UK home owners send over 18.8 million tonnes of rubbish to landfill each year - more than any other country in the European Union.
