Regency home given green makeover

27/05/09
A regency property that used to belong to the widow of writer Graham Greene has been made even greener, it has been revealed.

The five-bedroom Georgian house in Iffley, Oxford, has undergone a significant renovation that has seen it become a cost-effective and energy-efficient home, the Guardian reported.

One of the first things the new owner looked at was the property's level of insulation.

"If you don't wear a hat, your head gets cold. It's the same with a house," the homeowner said, adding: "I admit, insulation is not the sexiest thing you can do, but it works."

Andrew Leech of the National Home Improvement Council is of the same opinion and has previously claimed insulation is one of the best energy-saving devices.

He also stated draught proofing is "essential" and if homeowners add up all the gaps in their dwelling, it can become the equivalent of a hole the size of nine house bricks.

Meanwhile, also included in the green home improvement project in Oxford is a 93% carbon-neutral wood pellet-fired boiler system, secondary glazing and a rainwater harvesting system.
