Renewable energy is very cost-effective, says expert

Renewable energy can be "very cost-effective" in the long-term as it eliminates the need for fuels at a time when commodity prices are on the rise, an expert from British Eco Energy has said.
Helena Wright, the organisation's renewable energy advisor, added that the current economic climate presents a "perfect opportunity" to invest in greener energy, as it can help household finances by reducing bills while at the same time creating new, sustainable jobs.
Increasing the amount of renewable energy used in the UK will also contribute towards the development of a low-carbon economy, which is essential to tackling the cost of climate change, Ms. Wright commented.
"More awareness needs to be raised about how cheap renewable energy can be in the long-term, " she said.
According to research from Friends of the Earth published in April 2008, around two per cent of the UK's energy is generated by renewable sources.
The group said the government will have to sharply increase the use of renewables if the UK is to meet its share of the European Union's target of producing 20% of its energy from green sources by 2020.
