Renewable heating looking like excellent investment, says expert

A proposed government scheme to support the adoption of renewable sources of household heating looks set to turn a good investment into an excellent one, a sustainable energy expert has claimed.

Dr. Matthew Goodwin, director of Eco Energi, said that the draft Renewable Heat Initiative (RHI) will help to level the playing field for technology like solar panels, biomass boilers and ground source heat pumps by providing finance to balance their costs against conventional systems.

The RHI, which is set to be introduced in April 2011, will aim to support the adoption of renewable heating in residential property, as well as offices, business premises, public sector buildings and the industrial sector.

Dr. Goodwin noted that before the scheme comes into effect, it will be important for home owners to ensure that they have carried out the basics of improving energy efficiency, such as installing insulation and double glazing.

He added that it would be "madness" to invest in solar panels or biomass boilers if properties are still losing heat through poorly insulated lofts and single glazing.
