Researcher: UK will miss energy targets

01/05/09
A research director has claimed the UK will not meet its renewable energy targets without more government support, such as helping fund green home improvements.

Jim Skea from the UK Energy Research Centre said reaching the 15% renewable capacity required by the EU will not be achieved unless there was a significant increase in support from the state.

He explained: "Renewables can make a significant contribution, but if you look at the scale of what is required, I think that is very, very challenging and 2020 is almost tomorrow when you look at what needs to be achieved."

Andrew Moore, managing director of British Eco Energy, has previously claimed homeowners need more help to make their properties greener.

The eco-expert suggested a relaxation in planning permission laws would help people install alternative energy solutions more easily.

He added that a lot of people are interested installing wind turbines, but only a small number actually go through with it.
