Residential property 'part of climate change solution'

Edited by Bob Witham.

Residential property planning must meet the challenges of globalisation, climate change and an ageing population, it has been claimed.

The Town and Country Planning Association (TCPA) believes action to deal with climate change must include the planning of low-carbon residential property.

Chief executive of the TCPA Gideon Amos commented: "It means re-engineering our cities and their energy and carbon infrastructure; a public transport system which supports our form and pattern of development, the intelligent use of materials and resources and crucially, a new greening of urban areas."

He added best practice examples from the UK and abroad must be discussed at the United Nations Copenhagen Climate Change Conference, where minister for housing and planning John Healey will be making a keynote speech.

The TCPA recently called for Britons to be given a wide choice of homes in eco-towns which have appealing utilities and locations so that green aspirations of the residential property stock can be realised.
