The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) is to lobby for the wider use of sustainable construction and improving the
energy efficiency of existing
residential property around the country as part of its new UK Climate Change Action Plan.
After signing the international Communique on Climate Change, which has the support of 600 companies from the United States, the European Union, Japan, Brazil, India, China and South Africa among others, Rics said it has gone "a step further" by promoting the value of a low carbon property market.
The organisation has therefore identified different climate change priorities across the UK's regions.
In the north of England, for example, Rics will monitor public and private sector efforts to develop new ways of promoting sustainable development and improving the
energy efficiency of existing properties.
Meanwhile, in the south, it will highlight the impact of climate change projections on the future of the south-east.
In Wales, Rics will lobby the assembly government to improve the
energy efficiency of housing through the Existing Homes Alliance (EHA).
Members of the EHA include the Association for the Conservation of Energy, the Chartered Institute of Housing, the
Energy Efficiency Partnership for Homes, the Housing Corporation and the Sustainable Development Commission.
