Work to increase the amount of land available as allotments in Scotland is part of the move towards a
gardening nation partly capable of feeding itself with home-grown produce.
Through the Climate Challenge Fund, £2 million has now been invested in creating 34 new allotments and community
gardening sites.
Roseanna Cunningham, environment minister for Scotland, explains that the Scottish Government is attempting to encourage residents to grow some of their own food, with allotments a key way to achieve this.
"Grow-your-own activities are great for our environment, health and wellbeing and they also help us appreciate where our food comes from and how it grows," she says.
"We're in discussions to make more land available for community growing projects."
The Scottish Government notes that, as well as its direct impacts on individual health, the food industry is closely linked to the health of the natural environment and employs about one in five people in the manufacturing industries.
