Scottish builders invited to stone dust safety event

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the Working Well Together campaign and independent builders' merchant Beatsons Building Suppliers are teaming up to highlight the dangers of inhaling crystalline silica released by cutting stone.

Builders in Scotland are being invited to attend an event at the Eastfields Industrial Estate in Penicuik on 9th November that will outline the "practical steps" employers and employees can take to minimise the risk of inhaling stone dust, the HSE said.

According to the executive's figures, around ten construction workers die each week as a result of breathing in crystalline silica released in the drilling, grinding or polishing of materials such as kerbing, paving blocks and concrete.

When working with stone, the HSE advises using water to suppress the release of dust, wearing protective respiratory equipment and using dust extraction on power tools.

The HSE's Pamela McKenzie said: "Monday's event aims to provide workers with the knowledge they need to help them protect their health."

Earlier this week, the HSE launched the nationwide Hidden Killer campaign urging builders, electricians, plumbers and other tradesmen to protect themselves against asbestos exposure when working on renovations or demolition.
