Owners of period
residential property could make a significant saving on their energy bills simply by closing their shutters, curtains or blinds, according to the findings of a recent study.
Edinburgh World Heritage (EWH) used thermal imaging cameras to survey a number of historic homes in the Scottish capital and examine where they were losing heat.
Across the properties it assessed, the charity found that closing shutters and curtains was a "highly effective" way of keeping in warmth.
The thermal images showed areas where heat was being lost as yellow or bright red. Windows that were covered, however, appeared as light blue.
EWH carried out the free surveys on a number of Victorian tenements and Georgian town houses as part of its Climate Challenge Fund initiative, which aims to help owners of historic buildings within Edinburgh's World Heritage Site to improve their
energy efficiency.
The organisation was formed in 1999 by the integration of the Old Town Renewal Trust and the New Town Conservation Committee. It is supported by funding from Historic Scotland and the City of Edinburgh Council.
