Small changes can make gardens greener

10/06/09
Making small changes such as growing more vegetables, taking up regular composting or installing rain barrels can help to make gardens not only more environmentally friendly but also an "enjoyable living space", a green-fingered home owner has said.

Tom Calwell was speaking to the Peterborough Examiner as part of the Green Home and Garden Tour, which took place in the city on Saturday (June 6th).

He and his partner, Myra Hirschberg, included their "kitchen garden" in the event to demonstrate how making changes to be more environmentally sustainable can be both easy and inexpensive.

The garden, described as a "rambling collection" of flowers, vegetables, fruits, herbs and vines, is designed to have a low ecological footprint while being self-sustainable, the newspaper said.

Other home owners taking part in tour have installed environmentally-friendly options such as solar panels and geothermal heating, it added.

Cathy Mitchell of the Green Home and Garden Tour committee said the event is designed to give home owners the chance to talk to people who have already made ecologically responsible changes "not only their homes and gardens, but also their everyday lives".
