Smart meters said to be a must-have

An energy expert has underlined the importance of smart meters in safeguarding the future and making
residential property greener.
In an article for the BBC, Stephen Cunningham, UK and Ireland chief executive for Landis+Gyr, the world's largest smart meter system manufacturer, claimed the UK should follow the example of its European neighbours.
He said if the UK is to embrace alternative energy, smart meters "will be an essential part of the process".
Mr. Cunningham revealed a total of 30 million smart meters are already deployed in Italy, while energy giant EDF has launched a trial in France that could see 35 million meters installed there.
However, he suggested Britain could not only follow these examples, but lead the way.
Precise figures of energy savings that a nationwide smart meter deployment will bring have not been calculated because the "transformation is unprecedented", but he is "absolutely confident the savings achieved will be substantial".
The Energy Retail Association has welcomed the government's plan to have a meter in every home by 2020. A spokesperson for the body said they will prove to be a "real revolution" in how people use energy.
