The introduction of smart meters will "revolutionise" the way
residential property owners think about and pay for their energy, an industry figure has claimed.
Peter Jenkins of the Energy Retail Association (ERA), which represents the UK's major domestic gas and electricity suppliers, said the meters will allow people to see their consumption in real time, helping them to identify areas where they could improve
energy efficiency.
He added that smart meters, which will end estimated bills by allowing suppliers to take remote readings, will also enable home owners to compare their energy use with the "day before, week before, month before and even the year before".
Under plans published earlier this year by the Department of Energy and Climate Change, every home in the UK will have a smart meter installed by 2020.
Mr. Jenkins said energy suppliers are "keen to get started" on the roll-out of smart meters but the government needs to clarify issues such as meter specification, timetable for delivery and governance structure.
