Solar panels have been used in a major regeneration scheme to improve the
energy efficiency and layout of dilapidated Victorian properties in Whitefield, Lancashire.
The in-roof flat plate panels from Potterton Solar will provide hot water for the homes in Every Street. They were installed as part of an £860,000 overhaul of the street's 12 terraced properties.
Whitefield was formerly at the heart of Lancashire's cotton industry but with the mills long gone, the properties - most of which had no central heating - had fallen into disrepair. In addition, the houses were smaller than the national average, while households in the area are above average.
To get around this,
local tradesmen employed by Pendle Borough Council converted the 12 properties into eight four-bedroom homes.
The eco-friendly houses had been given extra insulation, energy efficient boilers, kitchen extensions and decked yards, while keeping their distinctive Victorian exteriors.
Pendle Borough Council senior regeneration officer Iftekhar Bokhari said: "We hope to further develop this theme into other terraced blocks and continue to incorporate energy conservation technologies while maintaining the area's heritage."
