Residential property landlords need to ensure that their homes promote
energy efficiency as increasing numbers of tenants are looking to live in
green houses.
The Residential Landlords Association (RLA) said that according to the Energy Saving Trust, people in the lettings market are looking for dwellings with measures in place to lower electricity and gas bills.
More and more tenants are also keen to have a home with lower carbon emissions.
However, the RLA said that a recent survey indicated that many people in the rental sector remain to be convinced of the benefits of the government's efforts to cut emissions and energy consumption.
Ministers aim to have smart meters installed in over 47 million homes and businesses, but over half (59 per cent) of respondents said that the devices would have to achieve savings of at least ten per cent to make them worthwhile.
Meanwhile, independent rental sector analyst Malcolm Harrison said that the rising interest in green homes among renters will not necessarily translate into more energy efficient properties, as demand for rental accommodation is so high that it is "a landlord's market".
