Residential property owners are to receive more help with improving
energy efficiency and cutting heat loss under plans announced in the pre-Budget report.
Chancellor Alistair Darling said that with a quarter of the UK's carbon emissions coming from housing, enhancing levels of domestic insulation is "key" to tackling climate change.
He therefore announced a £200 million funding boost for the Warm Front scheme, which offers grants worth up to £3,500 to cover energy efficient
home improvements for property owners or tenants over 60, households with a child under 16 and those in receipt of certain benefits.
The scheme provides an assessment of a home and recommends improvements to bring it up to energy efficient standards. Where oil, low carbon or renewable technologies are proposed, the Warm Front grant can go up to £6,000.
Mr. Darling said around 235,000 households have already benefited from
home improvements funded by the scheme and the extension will help a further 75,000.
