The government must protect funding for Feed-in Tariffs (FITs) if the UK's solar industry is to have the medium-term stability it needs to reach its full potential, it has been claimed.
In a letter to climate change secretary Chris Huhne, We Support Solar said the introduction of FITs in April have allowed more people to invest in photovoltaic panels and contribute to enlarging the green economy.
The alliance, which includes MPs, the Trades Union Congress, Greenpeace and the Renewable Energy Association, claimed the solar industry has started a major investment drive to expand manufacturing capacity, working on the basis the scheme would be reviewed in 2013.
Furthermore, companies are working in partnership with
builders and construction services firms to develop new jobs and skills.
If funding for FITs is cut in the forthcoming comprehensive spending review (CSR), it would make it harder for businesses to "plan and invest with confidence", the letter warned.
"The UK should lead, not lag, on renewables - and take its share of the global opportunity," it added.
Chancellor George Osbourne will unveil the CSR on 20th October.
