WWF: Tackling climate change is down to the individual
31/03/09
The WWF has claimed that half of the overall impact on climate change can be traced back to individuals, suggesting that people really can make a difference.
A spokesperson for the group states that the home should be the starting point when it comes to reducing carbon footprints.
Colin Butfield, head of campaigns at WWF, said: "The main thing is making your house as energy efficient as possible".
He advised that insulating your property is one way that homeowners can reduce their energy consumption, as well as employing energy-saving light bulbs.
If everyone in the UK switched all their traditional light bulbs to energy-saving versions, the electricity saved in just one year would run the UK's street lighting for over five years, according to the Energy Saving Trust.
On March 28th at 8.30pm, iconic buildings all across the world were plunged into darkness for an hour in the largest-ever global action on climate change.
Buildings that took part included the Sydney Opera House, the pyramids of Giza, the Eiffel Tower, the Empire State Building and Big Ben.
