Zero-carbon development gets green light

08/06/09
England's first large-scale zero-carbon housing development has been given the green light to move ahead, it has been announced.

The Hanham Hall eco village in south Gloucestershire is a joint project between the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) and Barratt Developments.

It has received planning permission for 195 zero-carbon homes, which will be built to level six of the Code for Sustainable Homes.

The properties will be constructed using energy efficient materials and their design incorporates high standards of insulation and water conservation, the HCA said.

Rainwater will be harvested at the development and residents will all have access to their own allotments and orchards.

Announcing the planning permission on Friday, outgoing housing minister Margaret Beckett said: "Since our housing currently makes up a quarter of the UK's carbon emissions, it's essential that the fight against climate change begins at home."

News of the development comes as sustainable building specialist Green Register called for greater support to speed up the adoption of green measures for existing housing stock.
