Accessibility ‘needed’ in self-build market

The self-build market needs help in order to become more accessible.

Kevin McCloud, presenter of Channel 4’s Grand Designs, noted there are currently a lot of barriers to success within the sector, which could affect builders in Manchester.

“Land is expensive, there is lots of red tape, planning is a nightmare and the whole thing is fraught with angst, but … it need not be like that,” he added.

Mr McCloud would like to see developers offer plots in projects they already have earmarked, while outline planning could also be provided.

Speaking at Grand Designs Live at the Birmingham NEC, he observed housing associations also have a role to play when it comes to managing stock.

At present, there are plans to create 100,000 new homes by 2015 by building on formerly-used public land.

Housing minister Grant Shapps has declared himself happy with the current speed of progress taking place.
