Interior Design Trend: Ceiling Design

Forget white stucco or neutral colours and go for a more striking ceiling design. Painting your ceiling in a dark colour makes a room stand out from top to bottom. So what are the benefits with this trend? First of all it hides ceiling cracks, odd shaped ceilings and it spruces up dull interiors. A whole sitting room ceiling needn’t necessarily be decorated, smaller rooms such as studies, bathrooms or the area below the staircase are good spaces to start with.

Depending on the height of the ceiling, you should either paint it in a darker tone than the walls (for high ceilings) or in a tone lighter (for low ceilings), this will result in an intimate atmosphere and create the illusion of space respectively. Whether you want the ceiling to be daring or safe, opt for one, two or more coats. One layer of paint normally won’t produce such a dramatic effect (unless you’ve gone for black!).

Ceilings aren’t just restricted to paint, think about textures, wood panelling, stencils and light fixtures too. There are budget ways to make a ceiling look like new – a hand painted approach isn’t the only solution. Whatever the design, make sure it’s in line with the rest of the room. A crazy ceiling juxtaposed to a classic interior will not win any design awards.

To really make a room stand out, consider a ceiling installation.  The image above is from a Japanese restaurant in California, which has created a design with thousands of wooden sticks. It’s certainly the feature of the room, so there’s no need to invest in other key pieces.
