Subsidence is a problem that only builders in London and other professional tradesmen could be qualified to deal with.
New research by Direct Line has found that the issue is currently plaguing the UK, with the capital city and the rest of the south-east said to be the worst affected. It is said that the soil in the region contains more clay, making it softer and therefore more likely to cause subsidence in buildings.
“Do not panic if you suspect you have subsidence,” Rob Warner, head of risk modelling at the insurance company said, adding: “Good property maintenance such as looking after your drains can help, as this could erode the soil surrounding the house.” The study found the top ten postcodes for the problem are N4, NW5, W10, N19 and NW6.
Brian Berry, director of external affairs at the Federation of Master Builders, recently highlighted the Green Deal as another reason to call in builders over the coming years, as people look to make their homes more eco-friendly.
