Founder of Canvas Decorators Ltd, Hassan Ahmed, specialises in painting and decorating services as well as plastering and flooring. He’s been a member of Rated People for over six years and now sources 75% of his work through us. In this edition of Tradespeople Stories, we caught up with Hassan as he worked his magic on a property in Balham.
A graduate of Interior and Spatial Design at Chelsea’s College of Arts, Hassan has long had a love for art and design. Keen to turn this passion into a business, he obtained the necessary trade qualifications and set up on his own in 1999.
Despite having the required knowledge, passion and credentials for the job, he lacked the contact list needed to get started. In addition, he didn’t have the cash flow to invest in traditional or online advertising. Hassan admits that the most challenging part of setting up a business is building a database of clients. This is especially true if you’re new to an area, he says. Enter Rated People.
“It was my tutor from university that recommended Rated People to me”, says Hassan.

He used the service to build local contacts, starting off by doing small jobs to build up his collection of pristine reviews. Hassan recommends buying smaller jobs and completing them quickly and as professionally as possible to ensure the best reviews. In turn, this will attract more homeowners to your profile.
“Focusing on buying smaller jobs means that your profile and portfolio will get in front of more customers, and may lead to future work, not only with that particular customer, but also with their friends or relatives”, advises Hassan. “The reviews that I have from smaller jobs help customers with a bigger job to trust me”.
Hassan prioritises flawless customer service as well as documenting the refurb process from start to finish. A keen photographer, Hassan carries around a Nikon to document his work and capture high quality images of his work. He then posts them on his personal website and Rated People profile.
