Clocks change could spark fire safety drive

With the clocks due to change this weekend, the government is urging Britons to think of their protection against fire.

The Department for Communities and Local Government has issued a reminder that the loss of an hour is the perfect time to check smoke alarms to ensure they are in working order. “You’re four times more likely to die in a fire without a working smoke alarm, but only half of people who own one say they take the time to check it regularly,” stated the government’s chief fire and rescue adviser Sir Ken Knight.

This time of year might also be an ideal opportunity to invest in all manner of home improvements related to fire safety. For example, why not hire a professional electrician to give a home’s electrics the once over to ensure there are no problems that could lead to a blaze? Only last month, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service was called to two domestic fires documented by the Runcorn and Widnes World, both of which were caused by faulty appliances.
