Demand for builders to rise as Green Deal kicks in

The number of people searching for builders in Brighton could be set to soar once the impact of the Green Deal becomes fully known.

Brian Berry, director of external affairs at the Federation of Master Builders, explained that the “ambitious programme” will trigger a spate of work in the sector.

With the government offering financial incentives for people to do up their homes in an eco-friendly way, builders may not know what has hit them.

Mr Berry noted that some 14 million properties are due to be retrofitted by 2020 – which he described as creating a “huge market”.

“I suspect there may well be quite a slow take-off, but I think that next year and beyond we will see an escalation in energy efficiency and retrofit,” he stated.

The latest Markit/Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply (CIPS) Construction Purchasing Managers’ Index showed that despite tough conditions, the construction industry enjoyed acceleration in activity during October.
