Fashion Inspired Interior Design Ideas

We’re fresh from London Fashion Week – one of the most anticipated weeks in the year for fashionistas worldwide. Organised by the British Fashion Council (BFC), over £100m orders are placed during the week each season and over 5,000 visitors attend, including buyers and journalists. It’s the showcase for fashion forward thinking and the chance to see the best of British design.

Interior design is often influenced by catwalk trends – where fashion leads, home interiors follow. Of course, their clothing will affect up and coming home designs but what if we focused on the leading designers? What interior design ideas and styles could be inspired by Vivienne Westwood or Tom Ford’s fashion?

Vivienne Westwood

Vivienne is famous for her adaption of historical garments into modern clothing. Her Autumn to Winter 2014 (A/W14) collection embraces muddy florals – giving them an earthy, fresh out of the countryside vibe.

Deep greens, browns and reds work together, yet there’s also a hint of a coastal influence with her latest light blue shirt, long deep blue blazer and cream tapered trousers. They may seem slightly at odds with each other but what ties the two themes together is a deep respect for the world that we live in. Her RED label has recently collaborated with model Lily Cole for this year’s collections, patron of The Environmental Justice Foundation whose mission statement reveals that it believes environmental security to be a human right. As Lily says, “Planet earth is our home. Yet climate change now makes someone homeless every second”.

With that in mind, the ‘Vivienne’ style home is an eco haven, sustainable and green. There is a vegetable garden, low or zero-VOC paint energises walls and ceramic tiles line the walls of the bathroom, since they’re made of 55-75% recyclable materials. Wooden furniture is of course real and not composite (it helps that cost isn’t a big factor for a designer) so that it’s free of the toxin formaldehyde.

Christopher Kane

As Christopher admits, while he wouldn’t want to be known for doing one thing, talk of trademark pieces and “the girls in the studio think it would have to be the neon collections”. His S/S14 collection seems to agree, with bright yellow and green jumpers making their way down the runway (second in from the right below). Here, the emphasis is on brights – no matter what colour of the rainbow they fall under.

The ‘Christopher’ home is a cheerful home that isn’t afraid to experiment with bold paint choices and in unusual places too. A vibrant ceiling may bring a living room or bedroom alive and could even be taken one step further with experimental patterns.

Since Christopher is a fan of teaming his neons with darker, black and grey tones, the walls will remain true to the darker base across a number of rooms, while seating is tasked with carrying off the vibrant hue. Where the interior walls lighten up, the dark shades work their way in via focal points such as fireplaces. Here, the neon inflection comes via the dining table and bench, bringing the scene to life with a splash of vibrant pink.

Simone Rocha

Simone’s design signature is described as “modern and strong yet romantic”. Her trademark is the floating Perspex brogue shoe and this season sees a heavy use of black, along with candy pink and rose red, made extra feminine with the use of sheer panels.

It’s no surprise that the Simone home is a home that embraces the light and airy. Open plan in style to maximise space and create flow, windows are adorned with sheer curtains to let the sun peep through.

A Perspex staircase is almost a dead cert, while in the dining room, the design gets a little braver, being taken to the extreme with a table, chairs, over-the-table lamp and home accessories that look a lot like this…

Another focus point for Simone in 2014 is heavy gold detailing – filigree trims and embellished necklines. Home accessories are jewellery for interiors, so gold mirrors and chandeliers are essential elements, employed to add the finishing touches to a fresh and youthful home.

Tom Ford

Monochrome is Tom Ford’s staple, yet don’t be fooled into thinking his London Fashion Weekend showcase was dull. Classic white and black skirts with black trims, were teamed with black polo necks and a long sleeved short body fur jacket in the case of the all black ensemble. In contrast, his tongue-in-cheek ‘Molly’ – a sequinned jersey dress that nods towards rapper Jay-Z’s famous song lyric, “”I don’t pop Molly — I rock Tom Ford”, doesn’t take itself too seriously, as the designer matched comfortable with glitzy. Variation was the name of the game.

A Tom Ford home has what the designer calls “classic simplicity” at its heart. Sleek, white polished kitchen countertops are the talking point of the kitchen while bedroom furniture could involve black dressers with white painted detailing.

His use of fur demonstrates a leaning towards winter warming – dark and glamorous with a strong focus on combining textures, such as furry, woven and feathery. Throws will bring cosiness to a living room sofa and as Tom says, his motto is not to think about mixing patterns too much – instead just “throw it together”. Metallic cushions and table accessories bring the fun factor home while tying the interior spaces together, as (jersey) sequins are swapped for grown up glamour when they make the move from fashion to interiors.
