Get home in top shape prior to sale

Strangely enough, one of the most important times to call in expert tradesmen can be shortly before you move out of a home.

That is almost certainly the case, if Catherine Haken, managing director and owner of Haken Relocation Services, is to be believed.

It is of course crucial to create a good impression when prospective viewers come to take a closer look at your abode.

Non-functioning appliances, faulty taps, broken drainpipes and tired decorating will not cut much ice, so invest in your home in order to get the best price for it when it comes to selling.

Ms Haken explained that decorating can be a particularly useful tool, suggesting dwellings that are up for sale should boast neutral decor, while each individual room must clearly show a sense of purpose.

“Each room [should] have a feature, a few key accessories and [it helps if] the place is coordinated [and] it has a nice flow to it. Everything [should be] looking well maintained and prepared before the property goes on to the market,” Ms Haken stated.

If you have spent the last few years putting off such tasks, then now is the time to ramp up efforts to return a home to its former glory.

It is also worth looking around the best-value tradesmen, as any saved cash can be put towards a future home.

Ms Haken noted this is very much the case, revealing many people have a large portion of their wealth tied up in a property.

Put simply, there could often be a need to speculate to accumulate. While bringing in tradesmen to give a home a boost will cost, it could put thousands onto its value.

Another option could be to splash out on eco-friendly home improvements, as Richard Addenbrook, managing director of Sense of Space Architects, said demand for green buildings is set to rise over the coming years.
