Green Deal to incentivise home improvements

Thousands of Britons could soon be enjoying eco-friendly home improvements on the back of the Green Deal, but only if the government overcomes a number of issues still facing the scheme. The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has suggested that the project has the potential to deliver carbon reductions and boost businesses.

With Westminster promising £200 million to early adopters of the scheme, it could pay to add solar panels or insulation to a home as soon as possible – and the CBI believes the government should offer vouchers to provide rewards for those who do just that.

Rhian Kelly, director for business environment at the body, said: “While the CBI supports a rigorous accreditation system for assessors, providers and installers, the government must not allow the pendulum to swing too far towards costly regulation.”

Andrew Leech, director of the National Home Improvement Council, recently said solar panels are a great investment and can help households save money while also doing their bit for the environment.
