Green home improvements could ease reliance on energy firms

The level of dissatisfaction many Britons have with their energy company may ease if they employ a professional tradesman to carry out a number of green home improvements.

Friends of the Earth has responded to the results of a survey recently published by comparison site Which? showing that many people are not entirely happy with the firm that provides their gas and electricity.

All of the ‘Big Six’ suppliers were rated poorly by consumers, as the impact of rising bills continues to hammer family finances across the country.

“It’s striking that satisfaction with some of the greener energy firms, such as Good Energy and Ecotricity, was much higher,” explained the organisation’s energy campaigner Paul Steedman.

“Ministers must take urgent action to protect cash-strapped families and fix our broken electricity system by investing in clean, home-grown power we can all afford,” he added.

However, individual homeowners could also take their own steps towards lower bills, a smaller footprint on the environment and a reduced reliance on the power provided by companies by investing in the latest green technology.

Eco-friendly appliances such as solar panels, ground source heat pumps and insulation could all be installed by a professional and have an instant impact – both in terms of producing energy in a greener way or by cutting consumption.

“It’s time to end the Big Six stranglehold over the UK’s energy system,” Mr Steedman continued, noting there may even be the potential to hold a public inquiry.

Another option for those of you who want to do something about your fuel consumption is to splash out on new energy-efficient windows.

Planitherm panes are the latest creation by Saint-Gobain Glass and are specially designed to retain warmth, meaning users do not require as much power from their boiler to heat their home and keep it at an adequate temperature.
