The latest ITV period drama to hit our screens is not only one of the most watched costume dramas on British TV, but also the most expensive TV show ever made, costing £1 million per episode.
Downton Abbey was filmed on location at Highclere Castle in Hampshire, which has been home to the Canarvon family since the late 1600’s. The house is 1,300 years old, and understandably it has changed a bit since then. The old brick and freestone house was transformed into a classical Georgian mansion and later clad with ‘Jacobethan’ style frontage by the chap who designed the Houses of Parliament.
Lord and Lady Canarvon’s Highclere Castle is proof that there is no need to move, when you can improve. There are nearly always elements of your home that you like, for the Canarvon’s we expect it is the view that has kept them there all these years. Which is why it is often better to improve what you already have and make the most of its best features.

Highclere Castle has over 200 rooms including a very well stocked library containing over 6,500 books. Don’t despair however, if your home is less palatial you can still get the Dowtonian look that everyone is craving. Edwardian décor made pastels and lighter colours popular, often with a chromatic theme as so beautifully depicted in the drawing room here at Highclere Castle.
Paint colours from Living in Colour
Paint walls in muted pastels and go eclectic with furnishing. It is best to stick to the heritage paint ranges, which have information about what period the colours are from, so you know that you’re getting the right look. The Victorians were not into minimalism, they liked to fill their rooms with furniture, photographs and nick-nacks but you don’t have to cram in extra furniture to get the look, just pick a few statement pieces that work really well within your room.
Patterns were big and used over large areas, featuring flowers, birds and butterflies. Mix fabric patterns, texture and colours and accent in golds; curtains should be full and heavily lined, and when it comes to patterns – you can’t have too many.
