Home checks advised after cold weather onslaught

British homes that have been put through a period of cold weather recently should be checked over to ensure no lasting damage has been done.

That is the advice of insurance company Aviva, which said the icy blast that continues to sweep across the UK may have had an impact on some properties. It also suggested that some simple checks – which could be easily carried out by a tradesman – are enough to ensure some threats, such as burst pipes, are eradicated.

“Freezing and burst pipes can be a real problem – in some cases ruining entire floors of your home. The risk can be worse in traditional properties without modern heating systems or properly insulated pipes,” explained Carole Gallagher, head of household claims at the firm. Taking preventative action now could be the difference between a fully functioning home and months of misery.

The AA recently urged Britons to think back to the cold spell experienced in the UK last winter for evidence of what sub-zero temperatures can do to properties.
