Home improvements ‘can increase value of country house’

There is a financial incentive to make home improvements to rural properties, according to the latest advice issued on the subject.

Philip Eddell, of Savills Country House Consultancy, has revealed a series of actions he believes will result in the value of a country house rising. Perhaps the best news of all is that there is no need to spend a huge sum of money, as many of the upgrades are fairly subtle. For instance, it said having all buildings on a country estate painted the same colour is a good start, while being consistent with the choice of fencing and gates will also help the aesthetic appeal of a property.

Those looking to make an improvement on a slightly more significant scale were recently told by Graham Lock, director and co-founder of housenetwork.co.uk, to add a driveway to their home, as this is sure to increase its worth. Mr Eddell added that a plan must be drawn up for the overall landscape of a piece of land. He also recommended keeping lawns and gardens in a good state  and giving a home a particular look that differentiates it from neighbouring abodes as effective ways of adding value.
