Homeowners urged to prevent burst pipes

As the middle of winter falls over the UK, homeowners are reminded that it is better to prevent burst pipes becoming an issue for their property than have to fix them once they split. With this in mind, it could be time for many to draft in a plumber to carry out emergency work to ensure that pipes make it through the season unscathed.

Rural insurance provider NFU Mutual has teamed up with Cunningham Lindsey to issue advice on how to tackle the problem. It said the potential damage can run into thousands of pounds and is particularly likely during times of frost, so hiring an expert to drain a system, lag pipes and check plumbing is a good move.

Matthew Scott, chief claims manager at NFU Mutual, said: “The good news is that preparing a building for winter freezes will dramatically reduce the chances of any damage being caused.”

Last month, the Bracknell News illustrated the damage burst pipes can cause when it noted the entire ground floor of a home in Ascot was flooded when a tube split.
