Kitchen refit ‘can add value to home’

Should you be looking for ways to add value to your home at the current time, it is worth exploring the possibility of totally revamping a particular room.

For the most profitable – and luxurious – results, one expert has recommended focusing on the kitchen, where a comprehensive refit can add value and improve the quality of your domestic life.

Alexi Sugden, founder of Egerton Designs, has spoken of the advantages of prioritising the kitchen when it comes to upcoming home improvements. She said this is a space in which it is possible to make dramatic advances that are “worth the time, money and investment”.

But it is not as easy as hiring a professional builder or other tradesman to knock your kitchen into shape. You must have an idea of what you would like in terms of design, with Ms Sugden recommending you first think about how much time your family spend in the kitchen and what it is used for.

“A well-designed kitchen will greatly add value to your home so that when you come to move, the kitchen will always influence buyers and increase the speed of offers,” the industry chief stated. She went on to suggest thinking about “the basics”, such as a freezer, work surfaces and cupboards. These must all be included in any plan you come up with.

Ms Sugden is not the only expert to comment on the benefits of using up home improvement budgets on the kitchen. Bernie Herlihy, deputy editor of Ideal Home Magazine, recently said the room is still very much the hub of every home.

And while there are many beautiful features and objects you can include in your kitchen for maximum style, you should be wary of some items that Ms Sugden said should never appear in the room. These include curtains, table lamps and floor mats.
