There has been a fundamental change in the way kitchens are used and seen by British people in recent years, which means they should now be treated more as an extension of your living room than a place that is solely for cooking and cleaning.
That is the view of interior designer and TV presenter Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, who has spoken on the subject of doing up kitchens so that you can really get the most out of them. He said many people are still making the mistake of decorating their kitchen in the traditional manner and not viewing it as a living area. After all, that is effectively what it is these days. Many of us have a table and chairs in the kitchen and use the area as a place to eat dinner with our families, entertain guests and relax after a stressful day. With this in mind, you should start to add a few features that aid comfort and peace.
Llewelyn-Bowen went on to claim those of you who do a bad job of doing up your kitchens will find people do not want to spend time there. Indeed, even your own teenagers are said to be likely to leave as quickly as possible to return to their rooms and computer games.
Looking to the future of the kitchen market, he explained: “The kitchen often has an enormous amount of money spent in it and will increasingly be trend-driven, because it’s something that gets changed a lot.
“It’s got an emotional link to the fact that people see it very much as the heart of the home, and a place where we all as families spend time together. So we’ll see colours and finishes change there in a very regular way.”
Perhaps the best way for you to ensure you remain very much in vogue in this crucial part of a property is to call in a professional decorator to carry out home improvements on your behalf. Splashing out on an expert could be the difference between a haphazard job and a high-quality finish.
Llewelyn-Bowen reiterated his belief that more interior design work is going into kitchens at the current time. The room seems to have moved on from its “showpiece” stage and is now simply an area in which many of us love to spend some time and money. And this is sure to be a good idea, as you increasingly opt to chill out in your sophisticated, classic kitchen.
Interestingly, the former Changing Rooms star added that he sees carpet as the perfect flooring material for the kitchen. This is an option that is not often explored in the room, as many people choose wood and tiles. But following his advice could pay off in the long run as your kitchen increasingly becomes a warm and comfortable space.
Last month, Llewelyn-Bowen suggested that many of us are becoming more willing to experiment with brighter colours in the home – a factor that could influence developments in the kitchen over the coming months.
