Many British homes in need of maintenance

A significant proportion of British homes are in danger of falling into disrepair, perhaps making now the ideal time to hire a professional to fix breakages, plug leaks and do up messy interiors.

New research by the AA’s Home Emergency Response Service has found that some 39 per cent of all properties in the country are on the way to being damaged or ruined by wear and tear. This is the result of millions of people putting off repair work and delaying maintenance projects in a bid to save some cash. Indeed, all of you homeowners around the UK are now facing up to the prospect of a combined bill of £1.2 billion just to fix problems that should have been sorted some time ago.

Tom Stringer, head of AA Home Emergency Response, said: “As the struggling economy continues to hit people in the pocket, more and more people are putting off home maintenance and are letting their homes get into a state of disrepair.” One common problem at this time of the year is burst pipes. Gordon Hannah, director of claims at esure, recently said that you only need to look at the damage caused by cold conditions last winter to realise how imperative it is to have such issues fixed.

But that is far from the only potential headache, with the AA Home Emergency Response Service noting that five per cent of you have put off fixing a broken window, four per cent have delayed work on a leaky roof and eight per cent do not get their boiler serviced when they should. “Many homeowners seem to be mirroring the government’s drive for austerity but this can be a false economy as problems tend to get worse in the home if you leave them unresolved,” Mr Stringer continued.

Those of you with this in mind may therefore wish to enlist the services of builders, electricians and plumbers immediately to resolve any issues you may be facing.
