Sleep can be improved by comfortable home surroundings

People who find it hard to get to sleep may find that investing a little time and money in their bedroom pays off handsomely in the long run.

Dr Nerina Ramlakhan, author of Tired but Wired, explained surroundings have a huge impact on the standard of shut-eye enjoyed by homeowners.

She noted it is important to create the ideal bedroom environment, including all the right sounds and smells. People could also hire a professional decorator to do up their bedrooms, instigating a new and relaxed feel.

Dr Ramlakhan suggested the perfect sleeping space is “supportive, it’s comfortable, it’s nurturing, it’s all safe, secure and the light [and] sound levels are right”.

Earlier this month, the McTimoney Chiropractic Association also recommended carrying out home improvements in order to have a direct impact on sleep quality, with good ventilation named as one critical factor.

But it is not all about decoration, as Dr Ramlakhan said it is vital to have a comfortable bed in place.
