Spring is a good time to invest in security

As the cold weather and rainfall of winter starts to become a distant memory and attention is turned to the summer, it is arguably the perfect time to think about investing in security for your home.

New research by Aviva has found that garden crime – including the theft of items such as lawnmowers and ladders – rises by 25 per cent once the clocks go forward.

Power tools, children’s toys and bicycles are just some of the other belongings increasingly targeted by criminals during the warmer months.

The Telegraph this week published a guide to some of its top sheds of 2012 and, as well as being innovative and stylish, these could be ideal from a security point of view.

If you wish to avoid becoming a victim, it might be worth hiring an electrician to install an alarm or to take other security measures.

Peter Ketteringham, household underwriting manager at Aviva, said: “Extra hours of sunlight are obviously very welcome after months of darkness, but it also means that your expensive power tools, bikes and golf clubs are more visible than ever to a passing thief.”
