Stay safe as houses with industry-approved locks, says BIBA

People thinking of hiring local tradesmen to carry out security-related home improvements have been reminded to only use industry-approved locks.

British Insurance Brokers’ Association technical and corporate affairs executive Graeme Trudgill said doing so will earn residential property owners a discount on their insurance.

He added that locks should only be fitted by a professional locksmith and, if a budget allows, should be backed up with the “extra deterrent” of an alarm system.

Elsewhere, security-conscious home owners could earn a further discount on their insurance by signing up to a local neighbourhood watch scheme.

There are around 170,000 of these groups active across the country, according to the UK Neighbourhood Watch Trust.

Mr. Trudgill’s advice comes after research from the AA showed the average cost of buildings insurance rose by 2.5 per cent between April and June to hit £209.34 a year.

Meanwhile, the annual cost of a typical contents policy increased by 1.4 per cent to £110.85.
