Everyone knows that the fashion capital of the world is Paris. Everyone should also know that it’s a city for interior design too. Maison & Objet, the biggest home fashion fair in Europe, opens up its doors in Paris twice a year and many of the capital’s interior design shops and suppliers participate.
If you want a good scope of boutiques and stores, you needn’t walk across town. Stay in the Marais district and check out the following.
The chicest of interior shops, at Merci you will find terrific inspiration, with linen, tableware and kitchenware displayed immaculately. The beautiful crockery and table settings will add sophistication to any dinner party. Explore the three floors and if you feel exhausted there’s a café to the rescue, complete with a library.
Gallery S. Bensimon
Modern, inspirational and high end, the Gallery S. Bensimon is a small corner shop with big design ideas. Our favourite objects were the table with matching chairs, which could be turned into stools and smaller round tables. Leave with better ideas for your home and if your purse isn’t bulging, bank the concepts for a later day. There’s a cheaper concept store on 8, rue des Francs-Bourgeois.
The little shop can easily be mistaken for selling your average tat but look closer and you can find some real gems that will make your décor stand out. Discover quirky lamp shades, noticeboards and wall decorations. Luka Luna is not one of those places where they have a massive stock; the shop is curated with items in small numbers. Not everything wins you over but there are pieces here which you wouldn’t find elsewhere.
You’re immediately struck with how colourful and happy Le Sentou is as you walk through its doors. Set over two floors, there’s plenty of bright items to turn your home into a sunshine state (at least for this season). Le Sentou is modern, however there’s no kitsch to be seen and most things are surprisingly affordable. Le Deun Luminaire’s LED-light wall decorations, which was everywhere in Paris, came into its own at Le Sentou and our previous scepticism was won over. It has low energy consumption too.
