Householders in the UK have been advised to resist the temptation to hire an unqualified gas engineer for a cheap price and instead use only a highly-skilled expert.
Jeff Learman, director of communications at Gas Safety Register, said in these times of economic austerity rogue traders can surface and win trade. He suggested there is always somebody in the pub or corner shop who “can do a job for you”, but it rarely works out well. “[If] they’re not [on the] Gas Safety Register the real consequence [could be] serious illness if not fatality,” Mr Learman stated.
As such, it is always worth ensuring a tradesman is sourced through a reputable directory and is able to provide evidence of qualifications and experience.
Gas Safe Register’s Phil Brewster recently offered his tips to homeowners, which included getting all gas appliances within a property checked on a regular basis by an expert.
