When home improvement dreams come true

We often get feedback from homeowners singing the praises of our tradesmen; we read the job descriptions and see the ratings, but it’s not quite the same as seeing the finished result. Which is why we ran a competition to find out if our homeowners’ improvement dreams really do come true. The entries ranged from the weird to the wonderful and everything in between, which made choosing a winner tough.

Daa-da-da-da (trumpets sounding), and the winner is… Lisa from Surrey with her 150 year old cottage renovation.

Lisa bought her cottage because she could see it had the potential to become the perfect home for her young family. This diamond in the rough of a cottage hadn’t had a makeover for over 30 years and was in dire need of some TLC.

This was a big project including: a full electrical re-wire, re-plastering, new windows and doors, bathrooms, flooring upstairs and downstairs, as well as removing a wall and fitting an RSJ to create a kitchen/diner. Lisa had never taken on a project of this size before, plus she and her family were new to the area and didn’t know any local tradesmen, which is why she used Rated People.

The initial job was a full re-wire, she received three quotes and selected Pro-Teck Electrical. Whilst not the cheapest of the three quotes, their reviews from their previous customers and Martin’s professional approach secured the job. This wasn’t a straightforward job however; the electrics were extremely old and needed to be chased into the walls and ceilings. Luckily, Lisa was so impressed with Pro-Teck’s work that she had them back to do subsequent work: fitting her lights and underfloor heating.

For the building she employed Home Developments, who again did a great job and she later employed them to reconfigure her front door and porch and lay her wooden flooring. She rated them 5-stars and left them a glowing recommendation.

New windows, electrics, flooring, this home received a total make over and is now the perfect mix of old and new.

Lisa’s kitchen before its makeover

Here’s what Lisa had to say about her renovation experience:

“Over the last 6 months we have had a lot of tradesmen in and out of the cottage with renovations going on around us while we lived here. That is why it was important to us to have a tradesmen we could trust and rely on.

Throughout the whole renovation process so far the only problems I have experienced have been with tradesmen I didn’t meet through Rated People. This goes to show there is a lot of benefit in having other peoples reviews at your disposal when making decisions about which tradesmen to use.”
