We\u2019ve summarised the new coronavirus government support initiatives available for small and medium-sized (SME) trades businesses below. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Coronavirus Self-Employment Income Support Scheme (SEISS) extension <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"766\" height=\"615\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ratedpeople.com\/blog\/assets\/2020\/11\/shutterstock_1206446020.jpg\" alt=\"Image of British currency\" class=\"wp-image-34276\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rp-prod-wordpress-b-content.s3.amazonaws.com\/assets\/2020\/11\/02165516\/shutterstock_1206446020.jpg 766w, https:\/\/rp-prod-wordpress-b-content.s3.amazonaws.com\/assets\/2020\/11\/02165516\/shutterstock_1206446020-414x332.jpg 414w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 766px) 100vw, 766px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>What is it?<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The government has extended<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ratedpeople.com\/blog\/coronavirus-government-support-for-construction-businesses#coronavirus-self-employed-grant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the SEISS<\/a><\/strong>, which was due to end in November 2020. In the Winter Economy Plan, the government announced that the SEISS now includes a third and fourth direct cash grant. In the Budget on 3<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0March 2021, the government announced a fifth grant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applications for the third grant (worth up to \u00a37,500) have now closed. However, applications for the fourth and fifth grants will open soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The fourth SEISS grant<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll get 80% of 3 months\u2019 average trading profits, up to a cap of \u00a37,500. This grant will cover the three month period from February to April 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eligibility for the fourth SEISS grant will be based on the Self Assessment tax return that you submitted on 2<sup>nd<\/sup>&nbsp;March 2021, for the 2019 to 2020 tax year. As this grant takes 2019 to 2020 tax returns into account, it means that it\u2019ll be open to anyone who became self-employed in the 2019 to 2020 tax year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">The fifth SEISS grant<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The fifth grant will cover the period from May to September 2021. The amount of the fifth grant that you\u2019ll get will depend on how much your turnover has reduced by from April 2020 to April 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Those whose turnover has reduced by 30% or more:<\/strong>&nbsp;You\u2019ll get 80% of 3 months\u2019 average trading profits, capped at \u00a37,500.<\/li><li><strong>Those whose turnover has reduced by less than 30% or more:&nbsp;<\/strong>You\u2019ll get 30% of 3 months\u2019 average trading profits, capped at \u00a32,850.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>Who\u2019s eligible? <\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone who\u2019s self-employed, or a member of a partnership, that: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Has trading profits of less than \u00a350,000<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>HMRC will look at your 2019 to 2020 Self Assessment tax return to confirm this. Your trading profits also need to be equal to your non-trading income, at a minimum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Traded in the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 tax years<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You must have submitted your Self Assessment tax return for the 2019 to 2020 tax year by 2<sup>nd<\/sup>&nbsp;March 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Is impacted by coronavirus<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You must be currently trading, but are impacted by reduced demand caused by coronavirus. Or, you have been trading but are temporarily unable to do so due to coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Makes certain declarations<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You must declare that you intend to continue to trade, and that you have reasonable belief there will be a significant reduction in your trading profits caused by reduced business activity, capacity, demand or an inability to trade, due to coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>How can I access it?<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Whilst applications for the third grant are now closed, applications for the fourth grant will be open from late April 2021.<\/strong> If you\u2019re eligible, HMRC will contact you in mid-April to give you a personal claim date, that you can make your claim from. They&#8217;ll also release further info about the fifth grant in due course \u2013 we&#8217;ll keep this blog post up to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find out more information about the SEISS on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/self-employment-income-support-scheme-grant-extension\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Gov.uk<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Coronavirus Bounce Back Loan Scheme extension<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"766\" height=\"515\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ratedpeople.com\/blog\/assets\/2020\/11\/shutterstock_1290662521.jpg\" alt=\"Coronavirus support: Tradesperson using laptop\" class=\"wp-image-34277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rp-prod-wordpress-b-content.s3.amazonaws.com\/assets\/2020\/11\/02165534\/shutterstock_1290662521.jpg 766w, https:\/\/rp-prod-wordpress-b-content.s3.amazonaws.com\/assets\/2020\/11\/02165534\/shutterstock_1290662521-494x332.jpg 494w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 766px) 100vw, 766px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>What is it?<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ratedpeople.com\/blog\/coronavirus-government-support-for-construction-businesses#bounce-back-loan-scheme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Bounce Back Loan<\/strong><\/a> allows SMEs to borrow between \u00a32,000 and up to 25% of their turnover, up to a maximum of \u00a350,000. The government has now introduced a new Pay As You Grow option, to allow all businesses that used the scheme to repay their loan over a period of up to 10 years, instead of the 6 years initially offered. This will cut average monthly repayments by almost half. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The extension also allows businesses to temporarily move to interest-only payments for periods of up to six months, up to three times. Repayments can also be paused entirely for up to six months, but only once and only after you\u2019ve made six payments.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, the extension allows businesses that already have a Bounce Back Loan but borrowed less than they were entitled to, to top up their existing loan to their maximum amount. They must request a top-up by 31<sup>st<\/sup> March 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you haven\u2019t applied for a Bounce Back Loan yet, then the application deadline has been extended until 31<sup>st<\/sup> March 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No repayments need to be made for the first 12 months of the loan, and the government will cover the first 12 months\u2019 interest payments. After 12 months, you\u2019ll be charged a fixed 2.5% annual interest. You can read more details about the scheme on our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ratedpeople.com\/blog\/coronavirus-government-support-for-construction-businesses#bounce-back-loan-scheme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Trade Advice Centre<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>Who\u2019s eligible?<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>UK businesses established before 1<sup>st<\/sup> March 2020, that have been negatively affected by coronavirus. Banks, insurers, reinsurers (but not insurance brokers), public-sector bodies and state-funded primary and secondary schools are excluded. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your business was classed as a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.british-business-bank.co.uk\/ourpartners\/coronavirus-business-interruption-loan-schemes\/bounce-back-loans\/faqs-for-small-businesses\/#f23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">business in difficulty<\/a><\/strong> on 31<sup>st<\/sup> December 2019, then you will also need to confirm that you&#8217;re complying with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.british-business-bank.co.uk\/ourpartners\/coronavirus-business-interruption-loan-schemes\/bounce-back-loans\/faqs-for-small-businesses\/#f22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>additional state aid restrictions<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can&#8217;t apply for the loan if you&#8217;re already claiming the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ratedpeople.com\/blog\/coronavirus-government-support-for-construction-businesses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS)<\/a><\/strong>, the Coronavirus Large Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CLBILS) or the COVID-19 Corporate Financing Facility. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>How can I access it? <\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Applications are open until 31<sup>st<\/sup> March 2021.<\/strong> <a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.british-business-bank.co.uk\/ourpartners\/coronavirus-business-interruption-loan-schemes\/bounce-back-loans\/for-businesses-and-advisors\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Fill in the online form on the British Business Bank website to apply<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS) deadline extension<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"766\" height=\"511\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ratedpeople.com\/blog\/assets\/2020\/11\/shutterstock_315846329.jpg\" alt=\"Coronavirus support: Tradesperson looking at computer screen\" class=\"wp-image-34278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rp-prod-wordpress-b-content.s3.amazonaws.com\/assets\/2020\/11\/02165551\/shutterstock_315846329.jpg 766w, https:\/\/rp-prod-wordpress-b-content.s3.amazonaws.com\/assets\/2020\/11\/02165551\/shutterstock_315846329-498x332.jpg 498w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 766px) 100vw, 766px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>What is it?<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ratedpeople.com\/blog\/coronavirus-government-support-for-construction-businesses#business-interruption-loan-scheme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CBILS<\/strong><\/a> is a finance scheme offering SMEs up to \u00a35 million. The government has extended the repayment term to 10 years as part of the Winter Economy Plan, to help businesses that may be otherwise unable to repay their loan. The first 12 months of interest payments and fees are also covered by the government. The application deadline has also been extended to 31<sup>st<\/sup> March 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The maximum length of the facility depends on the type of finance you apply for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Up to 3 years for overdrafts and invoice finance facilities.<\/li><li>Up to 6 years for loans and asset finance facilities. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>Who\u2019s eligible?<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>UK-based businesses with an annual turnover of less than \u00a345 million. You must also show that your business:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Would be viable, if not for the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/li><li>Has been adversely impacted by the coronavirus.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re applying to borrow \u00a330,000 or more, then you must confirm that your business wasn&#8217;t classed as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.british-business-bank.co.uk\/ourpartners\/coronavirus-business-interruption-loan-scheme-cbils-2\/cbils-faqs-for-smes\/#f18\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>business in difficulty<\/strong><\/a> on 31<sup>st<\/sup> December 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use the British Business Bank\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.british-business-bank.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/CBILS-SME-Checklist-v24.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>CBILS SME Checklist<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;to see if you may be eligible for a loan. You can do this on&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/pay-vat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gov.uk<\/a><\/strong>.<\/li><li>Contact HMRC on 0800 024 1222 by 30<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;June 2021, if you need more help with paying.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You must meet one of these deadlines in order to avoid interest or a penalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>Who\u2019s eligible?<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Businesses that had a VAT payment due between 20<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;March and 30<sup>th<\/sup>&nbsp;June 2020, have deferred VAT left to pay and opt into the new payment scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>How can I access it?<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Opt in to the new payment scheme by 21<sup>st<\/sup>&nbsp;June 2021<\/strong>. You can do this on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/deferral-of-vat-payments-due-to-coronavirus-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Gov.uk<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Enhanced Time to Pay\nservice for Self-Assessment taxpayers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignwide size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"766\" height=\"431\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ratedpeople.com\/blog\/assets\/2020\/11\/shutterstock_591447689.jpg\" alt=\"Coronavirus support: HMRC Self-Assessment form\" class=\"wp-image-34280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rp-prod-wordpress-b-content.s3.amazonaws.com\/assets\/2020\/11\/02165631\/shutterstock_591447689.jpg 766w, https:\/\/rp-prod-wordpress-b-content.s3.amazonaws.com\/assets\/2020\/11\/02165631\/shutterstock_591447689-590x332.jpg 590w, https:\/\/rp-prod-wordpress-b-content.s3.amazonaws.com\/assets\/2020\/11\/02165631\/shutterstock_591447689-390x220.jpg 390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 766px) 100vw, 766px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>What is it?<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An additional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ratedpeople.com\/blog\/coronavirus-government-support-for-construction-businesses#VAT-Income-Tax-deferrals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>12-month deferral for Income Tax payments<\/strong><\/a> that were due on 31<sup>st<\/sup> July 2020 and 31<sup>st<\/sup> January 2021. This means that these Self-Assessment tax payments won\u2019t need to be paid until January 2022. There\u2019s no penalty for using this service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 1<sup>st<\/sup> October 2020, HMRC also announced that the self-serve Time to Pay tax liabilities limit has also been increased to \u00a330,000. Find out more information about this on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/self-assessment-customers-to-benefit-from-enhanced-payment-plans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Gov.uk<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>Who\u2019s eligible?<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Taxpayers with up to \u00a330,000 of Self-Assessment liabilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>How can I access it? <\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/hm-revenue-customs\/contact\/self-assessment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">HMRC\u2019s Time to Pay service<\/a> to secure a payment plan now. <\/strong>First, file your 2019 to 2020 Self Assessment return as soon as possible, so HMRC knows how much you owe. 72 hours after you\u2019ve filed your return, you can set up a Time to Pay instalment arrangement with HMRC. The amount of grant that an employee will get will be calculated based on their normal salary, up to a maximum of \u00a3697.92 per month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employers will need to pay their staff for the hours that they do work. For each hour not worked, the government and employer will pay one third of the employee\u2019s lost salary each. In total, the employee will receive 77% of their pay, where the government contribution hasn\u2019t been capped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 31<sup>st<\/sup> October 2020, the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme was extended until December 2020. It was then extended again, until the end of April 2021. The scheme was most recently extended until 30<sup>th<\/sup> September 2021, in the Budget held on the 3<sup>rd<\/sup>&nbsp;March 2021. This means that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/check-if-you-can-claim-the-job-support-scheme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Job Support Scheme<\/strong><\/a> has been postponed until further notice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>Who\u2019s eligible?<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees that are working a minimum of 33% of their usual hours. Those on redundancy notices won\u2019t be eligible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To be eligible, businesses must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Have created and started a UK PAYE scheme on or before 23<sup>rd<\/sup> September 2020.<\/li><li>Be enrolled for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/paye-online\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>PAYE online<\/strong><\/a>. <\/li><li>A UK, Channel Island or Isle of Man bank account.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You don&#8217;t have to have previously claimed through the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme to claim the Job Support Scheme (once it&#8217;s open). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><strong>How can I access it? <\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The employer will be reimbursed in arrears for the government\u2019s contribution.
